NARRATIVE ONE – THERE IS A BOY, he grows up with a sickness in him. his real parents don’t want him so they give him away. the boy hears voices and he thinks they’re talking about him. he sees strange and horrifying things. he never outgrows those whispers and sights. as a man he chooses to numb his mind with hard drugs. he’s on medication but he hates how small it makes him feel. so he inhales vapor and takes different pills instead. when he runs out of money, he lies, steals and cheats. everybody in his life leaves him. he tries to kill himself but fails. he is then sent to a mental hospital where he spends six years. one day, a girl comes and tells him he’s not sick, that he has special powers. at this point in his life, the man is so desperate to find sense in his pain that he believes her. this is the final delusion he forms.

NARRATIVE TWO – THERE IS A BOY, he grows up with a power in him. his real parents give him away to protect him from an evil monster. the boy can hear other people’s thoughts but he doesn’t know they belong to them. the boy also sees terrible, terrible things because the monster his father failed to kill is living in his head now. the boy tries to be brave but he grows up to be a troubled man. other people don’t understand what he is fighting, they have no idea he is an omega-level mutant. so the man gets locked up in a mental hospital because he couldn’t fit in anywhere else. one day, a girl comes and tells him he’s not sick, that he has special powers. she tells him something he has already suspected and she sets him free.

david canonically has a dissociative identity disorder (DID) and a very specific system of alters called legion. "legion" also serves as his mutant name.

david’s DID is his brain's way of coping with the immense pressure his mutation puts on him.

david’s telepathy is too powerful for one mind. it splinters, it fragments, it creates other identities within one body so that they can bear this kind of power together. this is proved by the fact that legion has access to david’s powers even when he’s not in his own body.

david’s alters do not have individual names.

they have distinct personalities because they each represent a very specific part of david’s psyche but they do not feel the need to name themselves. this is because a collective identity is much more important to them than an individual one. they are legion, each one of them is legion, together they are legion and separately they are legion.

legion’s ultimate task is to protect david.

every single alter wants to protect david or help him with his goals, but different parts of legion interpret that task differently. some of them believe he needs to be hospitalized, some of them think that david can be only happy if he embraces his godlike status. but they all come together when it’s time to beat the shit out of a man who abused david for thirty three years of his life so it's safe to say they have their priorities in order.

legion doesn’t fight over control for david’s body, that's not what they want. they're fully aware they're not real people and they're not interested in the physical world outside. they take over only when he’s having an episode and when he just needs to dissociate or else he’s going to burst. this makes david extremely hard to knock out in a psychic duel because if he’s neutralized by another telepath, legion will just take over and continue the fight.

david is and isn’t part of legion.

he will sometimes refer to himself as “we” or "us", but most of the time it’s david and legion. the point of legion isn’t just to bear the load of his mutation, it’s to also help him cope with his trauma and his schizophrenia... as of now, he needs his system and those guys are definitely not going anywhere.

david constantly hears comments from his alters, he sometimes tunes them out, sometimes he mechanically repeats after them. their commentary can be both helpful and distracting. i represent this in my writing like this, ( voices ( within voices ) ).

( MAIN VERSE, goes untagged ) – takes place between season 2 and 3. last year david learned he has powers. this year, he tries to understand what that means for himself, mutantkind and the world.

( MAIN COMIC VERSE, #( v: 616 ). ) – david charles haller. almost ended the world twice. almost erased himself from existence. almost broke the timeline with his powers. obviously the next adventure for him is picking a college major.

( SEASON THREE, #( v: acts of god ). ) – follow the pregnant virgin. the forces of division are out to get you, but he can save you. david haller. his mind takes away all sorrows and leaves only bliss behind. he will teach you to love yourself again, as long as you don’t leave. remember, no secrets. you can’t hide them from him anyways.

( SEASON ONE, #( v: clockworks ). ) – a very troubled young man. this is his sixth year at the psychatric hospital known as clockworks. it’s the routine he struggles the most with, not the zombificaying medicine or the unpleasant meals. something new needs to happen soon.

( PRE-SHOW, #( v: it's always blue ). ) – there’s a new drug on the scene, it’s called vapor. it’s really good, worth almost killing your psychiatrist over. just a few drags and it will bring total peace to all of you self-medication fans.

( PRISONER VERSE, #( v: contained ). ) – something about a schizophrenic with godlike powers doesn’t sit right with a lot of people. i mean, it’s just logic, right? he is contained for now but doesn’t seem very happy about it. he just learned about his powers and now he can’t even use them? talk about being cheated.

( APOCALYPSE VERSE, #( v: world killer ). ) – well, it happened. just as everyone said it would. david turned and decided he gets to make the rules now. all his life people made him pick between reality and delusions. but guess what. he decides what is real now. and sadly, not all of humanity qualified.

( TEACHER VERSE, #( v: the johnny mutant school of etc ). ) – david is taking a little break. he thinks it's a good idea to get some perspective. unwilling to commit to either his father’s vision or his opponents’, he picks something different – johnny mutant and his school for mutant kids. david is currently working there as an assistant PE couch while he figures some things out for himself

( PERIOD VERSE, #( v: bedlam boys are bonny ). ) – i've heard the damnedest thing today. do you recall lord xavier and his mansion at the top of the hill...? yes, that one. well, apparently he has a son, yes, and not a wee lad, a proper gentleman... who had to be sent away because, you see, he was touched by the moon, shall we say... and no one even knows where the lad is now because he ran away from the last boarding school he was sent to. he might be dead, or worse, a vagrant! imagine that, a xavier boy-- a vagrant!
